Lower end St George sets
The
St
George pattern was the standard set for club and tournament play
before the Staunton.
These fine sets can be bought very cheaply.
They were still being made
by Jaques in the 1920s.
The
first example
is of reasonable quality, and came in what looks like its original box
with an 1890
text book. Note that the bases have a simple
incised line. It has a 3
3/4" king.
The following is cruder.
Boxwood
and ebony in
original slide lid mahogany box. King = 84
mm,
pawn 32 mm.
The knights look machine carved,
with
straight cuts, and rather
crude.
