Lyttleton's Carton Pierre Casket
George Lyttelton, 4th Baron Lyttelton
(1817-1876) was a Tory politician, holding numerous government
positions. He once played a chess match with Paul Morphy, was a
colleague of Howard Staunton, and
appeared with him and other chess
notables in the Illustrated London News.
Henry Selfe was an lawyer and later a Magistrate for the Westminster
Court. He was an active
member of the Canterbury Association and
1967 accompanied Lord Lyttelton on his trip to
Zealand. Lyttleton presented him with a set in a Carton Pierre casket.
The casket, very unusually, has all of the castellations present
the top corners.
